Residential to Commercial Roofing and Real Estate with Cindy & Ryan McDaniel- Gallery view Sep
What does it take to build a company that can survive changing markets, increasing competition, and nearly two decades of challenges?
In this episode of the Phoenix Prosperity Podcast with Tim Fergestad, Tim sits down with Cindy and Ryan McDaniel, owners of West Coast Roofing and West Coast Commercial Roofing.
Cindy and Ryan started their roofing business in 2008, right as the economy was entering a difficult period. Instead of giving up, they built their company around relationships, referrals, quality work, and taking care of their customers.
Today, West Coast Roofing serves residential customers in Southeast Arizona, while West Coast Commercial Roofing works with commercial clients throughout the state.
Cindy and Ryan share why they separated their residential and commercial businesses and how changes in the residential roofing market pushed them to put more attention on commercial projects.
They also discuss the importance of reputation. Their businesses have grown largely through referrals rather than traditional advertising. For Cindy and Ryan, doing what they say they will do — and standing behind their work when something goes wrong — has been an important part of building long-term customer relationships.
The conversation also explores roofing technology and energy efficiency, including a two-part roof coating system they are working with. Ryan explains how the system is designed to reduce heat transfer and potentially lower heating and cooling costs.
Tim also asks Cindy and Ryan about solar panels and roofing. They explain why homeowners should think about the expected life of their roof before installing solar and why removing and reinstalling solar panels can become an added expense when roof repairs are needed.
Cindy and Ryan also share what it has been like to build a company together as a married couple. After years of working side by side, they say communication, compromise, and making time for each other continue to be important.
Finally, the conversation turns to real estate. Ryan discusses his background in general contracting and real estate and how the couple is using income from their operating businesses to build long-term assets. Their recent development includes an eight-unit multifamily property that they plan to hold as a rental investment.
This episode is a conversation about entrepreneurship, adapting to changing markets, building a reputation, developing a strong team, and turning business success into long-term real estate assets.
